"With the outbreak of the First Eelam War, the guerrillas launched a modern guerrilla operation against the LTTE, which went beyond conventional warfare.The Army felt the need strongly. Accordingly, Major Gamini Hettiarachchi at that time began to train the most talented small groups as the US Army did in Vietnam.Accordingly, on August 20, 1985, the first batch (COMBAT TRACKER TEAM) proudly dispersed with 38 soldiers under Lieutenant Aslam Fazli Laffer. This team later became known as the Rapid Deployment Force (RDF).Thereafter this force consisting of 20 officers and 260 other ranks was established on 10th December 1988 as the 1st Regiment Special Forces at Abeypussa Camp.From then on, these heroic warriors were able to dominate the army as a giant kapruka and captivate the enemy with amazement and fear.

   Main roles.

• Intruding into enemy territory and gathering intelligenc
• Obtaining targets required for an attack in enemy territory / setting the attack mode
• Counter Terrorism Active
• Special operations in urban and remote areas, covert long-distance operation
• The Special Forces also serve as support teams for special and extreme operations (unforeseen circumstances), rescues, surprise attacks and military operations.
